A few words about the company
Like many other inhabitants of the island, who in difficult times found refuge and settled in various parts of Lesvos, the family’s origin is from Asia Minor. The parents and their four children chose the province of Plomari to start their new life. George Protoulis, who was born around 1880, owned 30 acres of land until the end of the 19th century.
At that time, olive oil production and viticulture were the two main agricultural activities of the islanders. In the summer, they picked grapes and in the winter, olives. This was the beginning of the island’s long tradition of winemaking and the production of spirits and olive oil. When, however, phylloxera struck the vineyards of Lesvos, it led to an even greater expansion of olive cultivation. Harvesting was laborious. The crops had to be harvested in the small, traditional, old-style olive mills of the area.
Today, the Protoulis family cultivates almost 500 acres of privately owned mountain and semi-mountain olive groves. The renovation of the two olive mills, a new state-of-the-art bottling plant, a smaller experimental unit for oil extraction and the development of “olive tours” on the Protoulis estate are among his progressive, ongoing plans for the family business.
