Citrus and Kampos Chios!
Kampos is a unique, imaginary citrus garden. In the center of the island, just six kilometers from the city along the east coast of the island. Fragrant citrus orchards. With their characteristic high stone walls made of Thymianous stone and rare mansions of particular architectural beauty and aesthetics, they form a unique residential complex. The area was developed as a suburb of the Castle of Chios by the Genoese. The 14th century is the period that marked the arrival of citrus fruits on the island.
Initially, silk was cultivated in Kampos and later citrus fruits. These developed into a key source of wealth for Chios and its merchants. The development of a dynamic local trade network until the end of the 19th century relied on locals. These people had developed business activities in Europe, Asia and India.
What orchards remain active are watered from wells with manganese that were previously used by animals. Now irrigation is done with modern means. Fortunately, many of the area’s unique mansions survive. Citrus’s headquarters are housed in one of them. Arched doors and windows, arcades of marble columns. Balconies stacked with small arches and huge gates, pebbled courtyards and painted ceilings give Kampos its unique character.
During the 1960s, Kampos began to decline. Crops gradually decreased year by year, while the mansions gradually became deserted. Today, Kampos has been designated a “historic site” by the Greek Ministry of Culture and remains an important architectural and cultural area where a multitude of activities dominate.
